Clean Up Australia Day

The planning for Clean Up Australia’s 2010 campaign is well underway and we are hoping to make it the biggest community event to date! Every year hundreds of thousands of Australians get stuck in and clean up their local environment by collecting and removing rubbish on Clean Up Australia Day.

2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day and we hope to encourage and inspire thousands of Australians to take to their local park, beach, bushland and streets and really help make a difference. Clean Up Australia remains Australia’s largest community event, it is a fun and easy event that anyone and everyone can get involved in. Individuals and local groups can either organise a clean up site or volunteer to join an existing site.

World Kidney Day

World Kidney Day (WKD) is a global health awareness campaign focusing on the importance of our kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide. The campaign is celebrated every year on the second Thursday of March.

The 2010 - our fifth World Kidney Day campaign will focus on Diabetes, the most common cause of kidney failure.

In 2009 - the fourth World Kidney Day campaign highlighted the importance of high blood pressure as one of the key symptoms and causes of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and was a formidable success with 370 different events taking place in 100 countries and territories across 6 continents. Participating organizations around the world issued a call for action to measure and manage high blood pressure and organised screening events to detect Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

Worlds Greatest Shave

The Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave is one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events. 100,000 people across the country will shave or colour their hair.

World Glaucoma Day

Glaucoma is a worldwide epidemiological challenge affecting approximately four percent of the global population with an estimated 50 percent of glaucoma cases remaining undiagnosed. Research shows that in 2010, an estimated 60.5 million people globally will be living with either angle closure glaucoma or primary open angle glaucoma.

World Glaucoma Day offers an opportunity to educate patients with glaucoma and those at risk for the disease by raising awareness and providing helpful tips about the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Cultural Awareness Week

Each year between 14-21 March, Victoria hosts a lively program of festivals and events highlighting our cultural, linguistic and religious diversity. At these events Victorians of all ages, from all walks of life, come together to contribute to community harmony and to promote mutual understanding and respect.

The Week also marks the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racism on 21 March and affirms our belief in the right for all Victorians to live without fear of racial and religious discrimination.

National Ride to School Day

Crazy Hair Day for cystic fibrosis (CF) is a fun way for schools to celebrate the end of the first term and a great way to raise awareness and funds for those living with cystic fibrosis.

The official day is 20th March 2009, but feel free to choose your Crazy Hair date throughout March and go as crazy as you can, getting sponsored and having fun along the way.

It is managed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity.
The key message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

National Playgroup Week

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is held on the last Saturday of March each year. It asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances.

Eath Hour not only helps to raise awareness of climate change but also gives people a voice about the future of the planet, and the chance to send a message.

Since 2007, Earth Hour has gained worldwide support for positive action against global warming. By March 2009, hundreds of millions of people in over 4,000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to vote for Earth.

Neighbour Day

Neighbour day aims to:

-Strengthen communities and build better relationships with the people who live around us. -Create safer, healthier and more vibrant suburbs and towns. -Promote tolerance, respect and understanding. -Break down community barriers. -Protect the elderly, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged.

Participating in Neighbour Day is easy. All you need to do is:

- Say G'day to your neighbours. - Make a special effort to introduce yourself to older residents in your street and anyone who lives alone. - Leave your mobile and home number for their use in an emergency. - Agree to keep in contact.
